One of the major problems that face both amateur and professional sound production is the aspect of the overall sound to all parties concerned.
The ideal is, of course, for it to be perfect for the audience (people), the people on stage (production) and those responsible for mixing it together (presentation): an ideal which sadly can rarely be achieved. This doesn't mean, however, that we can't strive for the ideal.
For professional outfits the "99%" achievable target is made much easier because money can be spent on equipment and people in order to get the best.
However, most people will be involved in this area in what would have to be termed the "amateur" grouping. This grouping does include those such as small local musical societies and "small time" bands who actually earn money from their musical production.
It is to this group that this manual is primarily targeted.
Now our statement earlier introduced the 3 "P's" that occur as a direct result of any group of individuals who want to present their musical talents to an audience.
- People: These are the group over which your company can generally have little or no control. Very few groups can dictate exactly what their audience makeup will be like, even though we may be able to apply some forms of restrictions (invitation only, prohibitive costs and isolated venues being just three that come to mind) over our audience. Included in this aspect we may also have to include the actual venue (particularly important if we take "our show on the road"). More will be said about this a little later in the chapter.
- Production: Some may feel the classification application here is a little different to the normal but I use it to describe those people who actually "create" the show - the singers and musicians on the stage who actually create the sounds that are to be conveyed to the audience, hence the use of the word production for this group.
- Presentation: These are the people (sometimes person) responsible for taking the product from the stage and presenting it to the audience, as well as (sometimes) back to the people on the stage.
The manual goes through all of these without the complex language often associated with this subject
